Health Canada says excessively high levels of lead have been found in a line of jewelry for children called Mood Chain.

Lead is toxic if ingested by young children and can have harmful effects on their cognitive development.

The line of jewelery contains necklaces and anklets with charms that change colour with changes in temperature.

Health Canada says about 12,000 pieces of the jewelery have been sold since 2006 at various dollar and discount stores.

The charms include – but may not be limited to – the following designs: a moon and star, a dolphin, an elephant, a square, a lock, a butterfly, a heart, a fish and a dragonfly.

The department says parents should take the items away from their children if they have them, and the jewelry may be disposed of in normal household waste.

Health Canada checks children's jewelry for lead on a cyclical basis which is how this problem was detected.

The department has not received reports of illness related to the wearing of this line of jewelry.

Pictures of the jewelry line can be viewed at Health Canada's website.
