Maple Leaf Foods says the thousands of wieners it voluntarily recalled after some tested positive for Listeria have been pulled from store shelves.

The wieners that were mistakenly shipped to stores in Ontario, New Brunswick, and Newfoundland and Labrador were part of a shipment of 26,000 hot dog packages that were supposed to be quarantined.

The company says it has contacted all its customers and confirms the two products, 450-gram packages of Shopsy's Deli Fresh All Beef Frankfurters and Maple Leaf Hot Dogs, have been removed from markets.

Maple Leaf (TSX: MFI ) also says it will conduct follow-up audits at stores over the next week as a further precaution.

While the company says the risk to the public is extremely low, it notes the release of the products does not adhere to stringent food safety protocols put in place last fall.

An outbreak of listeriosis which killed at least 20 people last summer was linked to one of Maple Leaf's Toronto plants, triggering the largest meat recall in Canadian history.
