SPECIAL TO THE STAR

Though everyone raves about Michelle Obama's biceps, her shoulders are the real superstars. To tone your shoulders, you'll need to do a variety of exercises to develop the front, back and sides of the muscle – and look good from every direction.

"The shoulder is quite a sophisticated muscle," says Daniela Nahas, our guide to buff arms, "and it's important that you work all areas of the shoulder – abduction as much as flexion and rotation – to avoid injury to its ball-and-socket joint."

Nahas, co-founder of Best Body Bootcamp, says this two-for-one move helps give shoulders a balanced shape.

Front to side

shoulder raises

1. Stand tall, holding a dumbbell in each hand, palms facing behind you.

2. Keeping your arms straight, lift them in front of you to shoulder height. Lower them back to the starting position.

3. Lift both arms out to the side, to shoulder height. Lower.

4. Repeat the sequence 14 times; that's one set. Do three sets.
