Yogurt cheese cuts calories

January 18, 2010

Savvy dieters know the value of yogurt cheese. Made by straining yogurt until it's thick and spreadable, yogurt cheese offers the satisfaction of cream cheese without all the calories. It can be made at home from a range of yogurts, from fat-free to full-fat.

Loblaws has built on this simple idea. Its new Blue Menu yogurt spreads are convenient, but do cheat. The plain version includes some cornstarch and cream. The roasted garlic and herb spread includes other thickeners, as well. Both have 13 per cent milk fat. Neither is as tangy as homemade yogurt cheese – a good or bad thing depending on your taste.

The spreads are launching in early February. Price: $2.50 for a 227-gram tub.
