New burger creation nearly triples KFC’s Double Down calorie count

Once again, Canada is missing out on a fast-food fat feast.
Friendly’s, the 75-year-old U.S. chain, has introduced its Ultimate Grilled Cheese Burger Melt, whose bun consists of two grilled-cheese sandwiches. With lettuce and tomato.
At 1,500 calories, including 97 grams of fat and 2,090 milligrams of sodium, it lards on nearly three times the calories and fat of KFC’s notorious Double Down. But with no “special sauce” to confound do-it-yourselfers, you could try the UGCB at home.
The nearest Friendly’s to the GTA are in upstate western New York. (There is a Friendly’s restaurant in Markham but it has nothing to do with the chain.)
Despite its Massachusetts roots, Friendly’s seems to have borrowed from the U.S. South for its entry in the death-on-a-bun stakes. The Chubby Melt and Hamburger Fatty Melt beat them to it by squashing a hamburger between two grilled cheese sandwiches, then adding onions, mushrooms and Thousand Island dressing.
The UGCB isn’t close to being the most high-calorie item on Friendly’s menu. That would be the 1,710-calorie Clamboat Basket, with 102 grams of fat and 3,070 milligrams of sodium.
The worst-of-the-worst burgers is available in the GTA, though. The Daily Beast crowns Chili’s Jalapeno Smokehouse Big Mouth Burger as the deadliest of its Top-40, with 1,750 calories.
The solitary Chili’s in Ontario so far is at the Colossus Centre in Vaughan.
Although it has but 40 grams of fat, the JSBMB shakes on 5,250 milligrams of salt. Anything over six grams is considered a possibility as a lethal overdose.
