Windsor doctor investigated for 'serious incident'

March 8, 2010 THE CANADIAN PRESS

WINDSOR, ONT.—Another investigation is underway into what’s being described as a “serious incident” at Hotel Dieu Grace Hospital in Windsor, Ont.

Hospital spokeswoman Kim Spirou will only say it involves an unidentified doctor in the emergency room.

Spirou says the doctor has voluntarily withdrawn his ER privileges while police investigate.

The doctor has been reported to the College of Physicians and Surgeons but no specifics of the case have been released.

The incident follows a probe into two unnecessary mastectomies performed at the hospital, one last fall and the other in September 2001.

The hospital, a surgeon and a pathologist are all named in a $2.2-million lawsuit filed by a Leamington, Ont., woman after her breast was removed last November even though she didn’t have cancer.

None of the allegations in the lawsuit have been proven in court.
