Nurses, union slam Ontario hospital funding plan

March 10, 2010 THE CANADIAN PRESS

The conversation Premier Dalton McGuinty wanted to have on health care seems to be getting off on the wrong foot.

A group representing nurses says it was never consulted about the proposed changes to hospital funding, while a union is likening McGuinty to “Leon Trotsky with an MBA.”

The government is promising to “pursue a path of constant reform” in health care to rein in skyrocketing costs that already eat up 46 cents of every dollar the province spends.

But the Ontario Council of Hospital Unions, which represents 21,000 Canadian Union of Public Employees hospital workers, says those words are sending a chill through the workforce.

It says the proposed changes to hospital funding sets the stage for rural and northern hospital closures and lays the groundwork for a private hospital system.

In Monday’s throne speech, the government said it would introduce changes that would see hospitals compete for cash and tie executive bonuses to how well their facilities perform.
