VANCOUVER—Twenty-five years to the day after Rick Hansen circled the world in a wheelchair, he’s launching a new fundraiser for spinal cord injury research.

The 26 month long campaign will try to raise $200 million with the aim of finding a cure.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper and B.C. Premier Gordon Campbell joined Hansen for the launch in Vancouver Sunday, on the closing day of the Winter Paralympic Games.

Ottawa will provide $13.5 million over three years to the project, while B.C. will contribute $25 million.

Hansen says his new global institute will formalize research centres across Canada and then branch to connect those around world.

Hansen journeyed across 34 countries and four continents to raise awareness of the potential for people with physical disabilities starting March 21, 1985.
