Canada to donate excess supply of H1N1 shots?

January 6, 2010 THE CANADIAN PRESS

Canada will announce plans for some of its excess supply of the H1N1 vaccine Wednesday, government sources said.

The move comes as the World Health Organization prepares to make the first deliveries of donated vaccine to developing countries this week. Though a number of developed countries have donated vaccine to the WHO for redistribution to poorer nations, so far Canada has made no such offer.

Government sources told The Canadian Press on Tuesday that an announcement would be made about a portion of the oversupply.

The lack of generosity has puzzled many who are familiar with the country's long-standing support for the WHO.

Canada ordered 50.4 million doses of vaccine in August, when it was assumed people would need two doses of vaccine apiece. Studies later showed one dose was adequate.
