Toronto's tanning salon patrons and employees offered mixed reactions to an international report warning of an increased melanoma risk for tanning-bed users.
Megan Licznar, 27, tans twice a week and said yesterday she has no plans to stop.
"My doctor actually told me (about the risk) – and I don't care," she said.
"Sometimes vanity has a price. I'd rather look good."
Kira Bensimon, 20, a customer at Radiance Tanning at Eglinton Ave. and Bathurst St., said the report scares her. "But I'm not a regular user. I've only been three times so far this summer."
Priscilla McNamara, 23, an employee at Arizona Tan near Yonge St. and Eglinton, offered a familiar defence of the tanning industry.
"It is actually worse for people to go outside in the regular sun without a base tan and get a severe tan," she said.
Christine Carneiro, 23, who works a few doors down at Bellair Tan, doesn't think the new study will affect business.
"A lot of people who come in like the tan ... They like the way it makes them feel, so I don't see them stopping."
