Diabetes Expo geared to black community

The Black Diabetes Expo will bring together products, resources and experts on topics ranging from healthy eating and physical activity to medication management.
The event will be held at the Jamaican Canadian Association and run from 9 a.m. to 3.30 p.m. Saturday, April 10. It includes free blood glucose testing, as well as access to health care professionals.
People of African descent are numbered among the ethnocultural groups as high risk for developing Type 2 diabetes and its wide range of complications.
The number of individuals living with diabetes is increasing at an alarming rate each year, particularly among high-risk populations.
In addition to speakers giving tips on living a healthy and balanced life, visitors will have access to a trade show where they can obtain nutrition samples and information on exercise.
Dr. Jacqueline James, staff endocrinologist at Mount Sinai Hospital will speak in the afternoon on the prevention of diabetes, followed by a health care expert panel discussion.
The Jamaican Canadian Association is at 995 Arrow Rd. (near Finch Ave. and Highway 400).
