Where do you like it?

On Twitter and on Facebook, women are telling everyone where they like it.

On the floor, the desk, the desk in history class, the kitchen counter, the bench at the gym, next to the fireplace, on the doorknob.

On the doorknob?

Those are some of the places women like to put their purses.

It’s the latest in-joke in the world of social media. A similar campaign in January involved women posting the colour of the bra they were wearing, ostensibly to draw attention to breast-cancer awareness.

October is breast cancer awareness month.

“The bra I kind of got — it’s connected to boobs — but I don’t understand the purse,” said MJ DeCoteau, executive director of Rethink Breast Cancer, an organization supplying information and support to young women with breast cancer.

The bra game in January was widely rumoured to have been launched by the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation in Dallas, Tex. It wasn’t, says Ericka del Rosario, interactive media specialist for the foundation.

Regardless of who started it the January bra joke raised the profile of the Komen Foundation and increased awareness generally among an important demographic: the young women who use social media.

Rosario is reserving judgment on what impact, if any, the latest joke-gone-viral might have.

“The jury’s still out. We’re not seeing the same reaction at this stage of the day as we did with the last one.”

Of course, both campaigns could be the work of a few guys in a frat house.

“It could be a sorority,” says DeCoteau. “I definitely would think it’s university-driven and in that age group. Probably someone in their 20s.”
