Here’s why most Ontarians won’t be getting Easter Monday off.
Is Good Friday a stat holiday in Ontario?
Good Friday, a Christian holiday that commemorates the crucifixion of Jesus Christ, is a statutory holiday in Ontario, as it is in most provinces and territories. In Quebec, employers can choose to close on either Good Friday or Easter Monday.
The exact date shifts from year-to-year, as it takes place on the Friday before Easter Sunday, and falls on March 29 this year.Â
Federal employees, those who work in federally-regulated industries, and most workers in Ontario will have the day off with public holiday pay.
Easter Monday, the accompanying Christian holiday to mark the resurrection of Jesus Christ, is not a stat holiday provincially but is a federal holiday.
That means most workers in Ontario will not have April 1 off, except for federal employees and workers in federally-regulated industries, which includes bank workers, those who work for Crown corporations like Canada Post, and telecommunication companies among others.
Members of the Toronto Public Service also have Easter Monday off as a stat holiday.
